Assume the
Position It’s…Jarvis Humby
by Gary Schwind
Five Star: A look at albums
that are so good that they impress even the most cynical of critics. Very
few albums are superior enough to obtain a five star rating but occasionally
a band slips through the river of mediocrity that is the modern music industry
and they produce an album that restores our faith in the future of rock!
This series is a look at such albums.
Let’s play a little word association.
I’ll say a phrase, you say the first thing that comes to your mind.
Don’t worry. Nobody’s watching you. All right. Ready?
Garage rock. What did you say? The White Stripes? The
Strokes? The Vines? Well, forget about all of those bands because
Jarvis Humby is better than the lot of them.
Why? Because Jarvis Humby isn’t your
run-of-the-mill neo-garage band. Jarvis Humby is closer to The Spencer
Davis Group and Booker T and the Mgs than they are to The Strokes.
Take a voice similar to Gaz from Supergrass, add your fuzzy garage guitar,
some rumbling bass lines, and a big dose of Hammond organ and what you’ve
got is Jarvis Humby.
The album begins with “We Say Yeah,” which
may just knock your socks off. Literally. Do not be surprised
if at the end of the song, your socks are clear across the room.
You know that dance at the beginning of every Austin Powers film?
“We Say Yeah” will make you want to dance like that. It’s not just
that they capture the sound of the late 60s, it’s the energy they bring
to this recording. I have to be honest with you, I think their live
shows must be tremendous because of the energy they put into recording.
It sounds like they worked up a sweat in the studio. You too might
work up a sweat from all the dancing you’ll want to do.
My favorites are “We Say Yeah” , “Oh Baby
(I Believe I’m Losing You)”, and “Black Cat”. But you could choose
any song at random on this CD and come up with a good one. I don’t
like to say cheap reviewer things like “This is your new favorite band.”
However, if you purchase this album, Jarvis Humby may well be your new
